AY 2026–27 is NOT Gone — It’s the Last Assessment Year You Must File

There’s a lot of confusion going around about the income tax system, with many people saying that the concept of “Assessment Year (AY)” has been removed.

Let’s make it clear:

AY 2026–27 is NOT gone. It is the LAST Assessment Year under the current system — and it is fully applicable.

Understanding the Basics

Under the traditional income tax system in India:

  • Financial Year (FY): The year in which income is earned
  • Assessment Year (AY): The following year in which that income is assessed and taxed

Example:
Income earned in FY 2025–26 will be filed in AY 2026–27

What’s Changing in the Tax System?

The government is moving towards simplifying the tax framework. As per the proposed Income Tax Act, 2025, effective from April 1, 2026, the concept of separate Financial Year (FY) and Assessment Year (AY) is expected to be replaced with a single “Tax Year,” aligning income earning and assessment into the same period.

Tax Year Concept:
The Tax Year will be considered from April 2026 to March 2027, and it will be referred to as Tax Year 2026–27.

Note: These provisions will apply only after official implementation and may be subject to changes based on final government notifications.

However:

👉 This change has NOT eliminated AY 2026–27

Why AY 2026–27 Still Matters

  • It is the final applicable Assessment Year under the current system
  • Filing of ITR for FY 2025–26 is mandatory
  • All existing compliance rules, deadlines, and penalties still apply

Ignoring this can lead to:

  • Penalties and interest
  • Notices from the Income Tax Department
  • Loss of tax benefits or carry-forward claims

Final Words

AY 2026–27 is not optional — it is essential.

It represents the final phase of the existing tax structure and acts as a transition point toward a simplified system.

Understanding this clearly will help you avoid mistakes and stay fully compliant with tax laws.
